The film "Troy" sparked fresh interest in the Trojan Wars and one of the latest releases from Carter & Crowley is a 54mm resin figure of Achilles, based on Brad Pitt's portrayal of the legendary Greek hero. Achilles is a central character in the Iliad and was famously made invulnerable by being dipped in the River Styx as a baby - except for the point on his heel where his mother held him...
Carter & Crowley's model is quite simple, consisting of 13 parts, including a base. The casting is flawless and the parts will need very little clean-up. Achilles is depicted running and comes with a choice of right arms to allow the figure to hold either a sword or spear. 2 spear tips are provided, but no dimensions for the shaft are given.
The detail on the clothing and equipment is beautifully done and a comparison with stills from the film shows that it matches the big-screen version very well.
Carter & Crowley provide a useful set of painting instructions. Skilled figure painters will relish the challenge offered by the deceptively simple scheme of blackened bronze armour and leather; pics from the film show the patina of the armour could vary considerable with changes in lighting.
This is an excellent figure of an unusual subject. Now all we need is a figure of Hector...
