This has kept me busy for several days already. What to build for this SF campaign ?
I want to try my hand on the "expert" challenge - not that I'd consider myself an expert, though. That means an alien planet dio, at least one alien and a piece of hardware.
First of all, I decided to go for 1/35 scale. Once you have the "feel" of a certain scale, it's easier to scratchbuild in it.
What movie ? No doubt here. I think the Trekkies look too clean for a dio, and Alien (though I'm fond of it) leaves not so much room for creativity.

So it will be Star Wars for sure. Very colorful, well documented on their website.
What planet ? ... Aaah ! So much choice !
What species ? There's dozens in the database of www.starwars.com ! What
vehicles ? Almost just as many.

Then I got this crazy idea... Would anyone else on Armorama join in to build the SAME subject ? We could agree on one 1/35 vehicle and at least three creatures/characters of minimum two different species to scratchbuild. Pick a location. And just build that dio ! Everyone could build his own story, using the same ingredients. I can already see the "work in progress" pictures. If we start now, we can get this done before the end of February.

My mood is swinging from Tatooine (Wattoo's shop ? Lars' Moisture Farm ?) to Naboo (lakeside resort ?), maybe even Dagobah (Yoda's swamp) or Kamino (Tipoca city ? ).

Who would join in such challenge ? What would be a nice content ?
Or would you have suggestions for me what to build ?

Of course, all this would happen within the guidelines of the Sci-Fi campaign !

I look forward to your reply !

Jan

Well, since I'm on the Jury and don't consider myself eligibe for winning a medal - I was gonna go for broke and enter the expert class.

I intended on modeling the Eye of Palpatine from the Star Wars Expanded Universe novel series. There are so many interesting stories and situations there, inspiration is endless.

Your combined project also sounds interesting. Maybe some of the entrants might consider that too. The result could be most impressive.

Hmm.... that's an interesting idea, Jan!
A few random thoughts:
-Tatooine- Three tusken raiders (or two jawas and a droid) survey a long wrecked starfighter, that is buried in sand, for spare parts.
-Naboo- Maybe a crashed N-1 starfighter in a gungan swamp?
-Kamino- Any crashed starship would have to be crashed into a city, as there is no landmass...
-Hoth- A forgotten snowspeeder, buried under drifts of snow. (with Wampas looking for food) BTW - I just found out that Ertl's Snowspeeder is 1/35th! Star Wars kit scales
-Endor- A ruined AT-AT or AT-ST that now is home to some ewoks? (it'd be tough to get the scale right though... Ewoks are hard to measure! )

YES ! I wouldn't even mind making that a whole crowd of jawas (quite easy to scratchbuild I suppose) and a variety of droids ! Could be fun ...

Mmmm. Making that swamp and the vegetation could be interesting. Only... what species to bring in ? Anything mud-crawling would be cute as a background, but who to cast in the leading role ?

This could be a charred boat-like craft moored at the quay. I kinda like the kaminoans

DOH ! I should have thought of that. How could I overlook Hoth ?!
We just did a snow dio, though...

Nah... no teddies for me. They look a bit too "Disney" to my taste, and don't make convincing aliens.

Of these five, I think I'd like the Jawas most. Why not try optic fibre to make their glowing red eyes ? Maybe even add some Tatooine buildings in the scene. Would it be wrong to show Jawas in the streets of Mos Espa ?

Why dont you do something like Coruscant after the Imperial Civil War in Dark Empire and DEII?There is a pot load of wrecked starships, vehicles, etc. to go around and you could have a funky looking alien going through all of it for sparre parts.

After putting on the ol' Thinking Cap again (really just my winter hat - it's cold today!) I've got a few more ideas.
-Dantooine- the backstory states the the Rebels did indeed have a base here, but abandoned it quickly. Maybe a forgotten starfighter on an airfield?
-Kessel- a crashed frieghter, with scavengers huning for unruined spice. (remember the spice mines of Kessel?)
-Hoth- instead of a T-47 Snowspeeder, what about a ruined AT-AT? Or how about a ship left in the Echo Base main hangar?
-Speaking of T-47s, technically these were heavily modified to work in Hoth. That means they could've been easily used on Tatooine... or Kuat.... or just about any other Star Wars planet...

I've been thinking it over. I'm extremely busy with other projects at this moment (I'm a specimen of that dissapearng breed of people who still practice a daytime job), but I spent many hours in morning and evening traffic jams, and when nobody"s on the phone thinking about modeling is one of my favorite pass-times.
If we only start this sci-fi campaign on 10 january, I could try get a head-start by scratchbuilding a few figures and maybe even a craft.
My choice definitely goes to Star Wars. I'll make a diorama on Tatooine, involving jawas, droid(s) and maybe some other species, too. Heck, if I can manage to spend some extra days off modeling, I'll make it a busy street in Mos Espa ! All that will be 1/35, size of the dio to be determined by the craft and maybe some buildings.
Should I build a real landspeeder like in SWI, an invented type of landspeeder (well used and weathered, of course) or something else... Hmmm. As it's freezing, there will be HUGE traffic jams tomorrow. I'm sure I'll think of something good !

If anyone wants to join in this challenge... Tatooine scene 1/35 with scratchbuilt vehicles... just let me know !

Well, so far, I'm still alowing my mind to roam freely. I don't know yet If I'll be doing somethng completely out of my imagination for a SW dio, or if I'll try to represent something from the actual movies...

My landspeeder (or other craft... ?) will be invented, so will some aliens or droids be. But when you look at it, I want you to think "that's on Tatooine !".
Too bad I've got so much other stuff to do now. My fingers are itching already !!

Jan, I'll take the challenge of a scratchbuilt abandoned vehicle on tatooine! :-)
Since I'm already doing one original ship, why not two? Looking at the pics you posted, I have an urge to make a scene with a moisture vaporator! ...or maybe even a sandcrawler!

...Eek! Must stop thinking while I have the urge to scratchbuild!!!

Joe,

That's great news ! Those pictures are hard to resist, huh ? I hope someone else joins in, too !

Don't pull those jedi mind tricks on me, though ! You're mindreading again.
I had considered the sandcrawler too, but that would be too big for a 1/35 dio. PART of a sandcrawler would be nice, though.
The vaporizers in the pics had struck my eye, too. It will depend of the rest of my dio wether I add one or not. I'm sure there's a lot more detailed pics out there on the web. All pics are from the same movie, so there's plenty of other stuff too. Mos Eysley can be used, too.
If I remember well, the edited version of the original star wars movie has some spectacular Mos Eysley street action ! Maybe we can find pics of that on the web, too ?

Guys,
Here are two figures for some insperational thoughts. As soon as I get the digital camera from work, I will take some pictures of the Storm Trooper on Dewback surrounded by Tuskin Raiders Diorama.
