Atlas enlarges their model railroad accessories series with Cararama construction vehicles. This HO model is their Volvo Backhoe Loader BL71, item 30000093.
Cararama
Cararama is a registered brand of die-cast models by Hongwell of Hong Kong. Cararama are available in HO - 1/87 and O - 1/48 scales.
Volvo Backhoe Loader BL71
This is a sharp HO model of a modern backhoe by Swedish giant Volvo. The model is made of die-cast metal with some plastic and plastic-rubber pieces. Casting and molding of each component is sharp with no flaws. Clear styrene "glass" in the cab is undistorted so you can enjoy the interior.
detail
The model is also an "action" model with an elevating and tilting clamshell bucket loader, plus swiveling and articulation for the backhoe boom and stick and bucket. However, the stabilizer legs are not functional and front wheels do not steer.
Detail inside the cab is good. Outside the cab are pre-attached side mirrors and an exhaust pipe.
No attempt was made to simulate a drive train nor engine detail under the tractor.
For fun I have linked to a Caterpillar Backhoe site including a 3-D backhoe simulator. See Click here for additional images for this review , below.
paint and finish
The paint is smooth and doesn’t obscure detail. All lettering appears to be painted on. However, the hinge pins for the moving parts are shiny.
Conclusion
Atlas’ Cararama Volvo backhoe is a good model. It has good detail including the moving features. Aside from the shiny hinges and no under chassis detail, I don’t have any complaints.
Volvo Backhoe Loader BL71 will enhance any HO layout and diorama. Recommended.
