Introduction

Scenery specialist NOCH provides flexible embossed sheets of masonry for modelers to create their own structures. Dolomite Wall (Dolomite Mauerplatte), item 57520 is one choice, part of the Mauerplatte (embossed wall panels) series.

Dolomite Wall

This sheet is made of a flexible product and has no packaging. It measures 32 cm x 16 cm / 12.6 (12 9/16th) in. x 6.2 (6 3/16) in. Modelers can use this for retaining and property walls, and creating buildings. For those of us who dream big, they also make the same sheet twice as long.

Dolomite is both a mineral and a rock. The mineral is the pure form, and Dolomite rock is composed mostly of Dolomite but also with impurities such as Calcite, Quartz, and Feldspar.*

NOCH used photographs of actual dolomite walls to create the face. This replicates coloration which mimics mortar and subtle variations in the crystalline dolomite.

The low embossing creates mortar joint and rough stone textures. The sheet has a slight sheen that can be tones down by any number of paints, washes, clear coats and weathering powders.

I notice fine shading so use care when you orient this sheet for vertical surfaces or your scratchbuilt masterpiece may leaves you perplexed that something is not quite right.

NOCH advertises it for HO - 1/87 and TT scales. TT is 1/100 to 1/120 depending on which side of the English Channel you are on. Regardless, the stones are various sizes and suitable for any scale. The photos show it with an HO train.

I think Dolomite Wall is a very useful product for scratchbuilders and kitbashers. It is easy to work with and looks very authentic.
