Introduction

Herpa has released this VW Golf I in 1/120. It is item 066617. At the time of this review, Herpa catalogues 180 Volkswagen models, including 26 Golf models, in scales 1/43, 1/87, and 1/120.

Herpa tells us;

From 1977, a total of 10,000 vehicles type Golf I were delivered from the Federal Republic of Germany to the GDR within a compensation transaction. This makes the vehicle an enhancement of model railways since the TT track has primarily especially been popular in the GDR.

Let's take a swing at this Golf.

The Model

This factory assembled model is packed in an end-opening carton with a clear window. It features a holographic licensing placard on a side. The model is securely held in a form-fitted light plastic cradle; these don't look like much but several Herpa models I have received arrived in boxes crushed in shipping and yet the models were not damages. Well done Herpa!

The model is plastic and mainly molded in color. The plastic is smooth with no injection molding flaws, no flash, sink holes, seam lines nor visible ejector circles. The parts were snipped off their sprues without any burrs. It was assembled with no glue marks.

The clear plastic of the windows has distortion and cloudiness, preventing a good look into the interior. That is unusual as other 1/120 and N scale Herpa models, i.e., Barkas B Police Van, have clear windows. Herpa uses a hybrid plastic-rubber for the tires.

Detail

Those tires have no detail.

The cabin has basic detail like seats and a steering wheel.

Raised and recessed detail is molded on the exterior.

While the underside of the model also features molded detail, at this scale is it very convincing and looks good. The overall model does.

Finish

The model is molded in color, marsrot / martian red. Chrome trim and black trim is painted on. Headlights, brake lights, and parking lights are painted on. Herpa also printed the VW emblems and type name.

Conclusion

Herpa's TT scale-1/120 Golf I should be a welcome arrival for modelers of the scale and era. It features good convincing detail. The cloudy clear windows are disappointing but there is not much to see inside the cabin.

I posed it with TT figures from NOCH. Overall this is a nice little model. Recommended.
