Airfix Railway Turntable
Turntable HO & OO Gauge Scale
  • Airfix OO ( 1/76 ) Scale Railway Turntable

RailRoad Modeling

Molded in fifty-four firm light gray styrene pieces and thought to be based on a Great Western Railway prototype, Airfix's turntable is a simple kit of this interesting and unique appliance of railroads. With a ground level foundation, this model twelve-inch ( 305mm ) structure can easily be incorporated into one's model railroad, a diorama or built as a stand-alone piece. This is far more useful than the usual American turntable, which is recessed in a deep pit.

Molding quality of the thick parts is crisp, with very little flash. Very light raised surface detail simulates the planking of the bridge deck. While ejector marks mar one side of the four bridge pieces, others should not be visible once the unit is assembled. I have only spied a single sink hole on a viewable side, that being a portion of the decking. Perhaps the track--supplied by you-- will obscure this.

As was (and still is to an extent) the fashion of the day, the scale is labeled HO ( 1/87, 3.5 millimeters to the foot ) & OO ( 1/76, 4 millimeters to the foot ). This turntable is long enough to accommodate nearly all European, and most American, mainline steam and diesel-electric locomotives.

For the sake of history, I include a photo of the Airfix list of products available at the time (date unknown). While Airfix has been resurrected by Hornby Hobbies Ltd., DAPOL now owns the molds for the Airfix railway models. This line of products includes the beloved Rosebud Kitmaster models. These kits are available from DAPOL Model Railways, which is why I show DAPOL under RELATED LINK TITLE as well as their ITEM ID and price. I intend to review some of their items in the near future.

About Frederick Boucher (JPTRR)

I'm a professional pilot with a degree in art. My first model was an AMT semi dump truck. Then Monogram's Lunar Lander right after the lunar landing. Next, Revell's 1/32 Bf-109G...cried havoc and released the dogs of modeling! My interests--if built before 1900, or after 1955, then I proba...
