While Airfix has been resurrected by Hornby Hobbies Ltd., DAPOL owns the molds for the Airfix railway models. This line of products includes the beloved Rosebud Kitmaster models. These kits are available from DAPOL Model Railways, which is why I show DAPOL under RELATED LINK TITLE as well as their ITEM ID and price. Please visit the reviews of their items.
The Kit
Molded in twenty-one firm buff styrene pieces and based on The Midland Railway's Oakham in Rutland prototype, Airfix's Signal Box is a simple kit of this essential and ubiquitous facility of railways. With no foundation, this compact model structure can easily be incorporated into one's model railroad, a diorama or built as a stand-alone piece.

Oddly, no decals proclaiming Oakham Level Crossing are provided! Perhaps DAPOL has remedied this?

This building is full of windows but no interior is given. Not even a floor!
Molding quality of the thin parts is crisp with no flash evident. Very light raised surface detail simulates the lap planking of the structure. The shingles are softly molded. I will cover mine with paper or card shingles. No ejector marks mar visible areas. I spy no sink holes on a viewable side.
As was (and still is to an extent) the fashion of the day, the scale is labeled HO (1/87, 3.5 millimeters to the foot ) & OO ( 1/76, 4 millimeters to the foot ). This is a peculiarity of British model railroading, that the bigger English OO scale runs on the smaller scale HO track.

Highs: Crisp molding, good size, universal railway subject.
Lows: Ambiguous scale, no interior, soft exterior detail, no decals.
Verdict: A useful, inexpensive, small model with big possibilities!

About Frederick Boucher (JPTRR)

I'm a professional pilot with a degree in art. My first model was an AMT semi dump truck. Then Monogram's Lunar Lander right after the lunar landing. Next, Revell's 1/32 Bf-109G...cried havoc and released the dogs of modeling! My interests--if built before 1900, or after 1955, then I proba...
