PFA Productions has made a name for themselves in the modeling world with their accessories, several of which can be seen in the news section of KitMaker. They are expanding their product lines into the model railroad world. The Kavanaugh Homestead farmhouse is one of their growing line that will encompass HO, N and Z scales, as well as larger scales upon request.

The Model

Based on a house in Nebraska, USA, Kavanaugh Homestead is a typical balloon frame clapboard house ubiquitous across North America. This is a multi-media kit of acrylic, cardstock and styrene. Any CA ( Cyanoacrylate, or "superglue" ) will work bonding the pieces. The exterior siding is backed with adhesive.

Laser cut, the pieces look crisp and sharp.

The instruction sheet is well prepared and features photographs of each step, plus crisp full-scale floor plans and schematics. Additional, it offers a pair of 3-D exploded views of the roof diagram.

PFA Productions also includes an acrylic triangle for the aligning of the parts.

assembly

This kit looks to be a straight forward assembly process. The parts start with a base plate, to which the internal structure is attached, piece by alphabetically-inscribed piece; these pieces are opaque. Then comes the crystal-clear external structure, to which you will attach the simulated clapboard siding. The clear external structure is your window glass! No worry about aligning and crazing thin clear plastic sheet--great idea! The only drawback is if you wish to have a window or door open. Cutting will be thus required.

The roof and windows are cut on their 'sprue' to be in the order you will attach them--pretty clever! While there are no shingles provided as with some craftsman kits, it does appear to be shingle texture lasered into the roof pieces.

impressions

I look forward to building this model! It appears that it will go together quickly. I am curious about how well the aligning of the self-adhesive siding will go, how easily it can be adjusted if I am sloppy, but this is an exciting model! I would prefer separate shingles but that is minor.
