MAN TGS M Fuel Tank Trailer "Shell"
Collection: CARS & TRUCKS
Manufacturer: MAN
Type: TGS M
Series: Tank and Bulk Cargo Trucks

Shell Oil Company’s refueling tank truck received a new chassis while the two tanks remained the same. Shell is the worldwide biggest power supplier and has been the worldwide biggest company according to turnover since July 2009. The company is active in over 140 countries with about 112,000 employees worldwide.

At the time of this review, Herpa offers 228 models in their Tank and Bulk Cargo Trucks series, and more than 750 MAN vehicles, of which 28 are the TGS M type.

MAN produces a wide assortment of utility vehicles of varying classes, from transporting heavy loads to short-haul and distribution transport. The MAN TGS series was introduced in 2007. They feature 2-, 3-, and 4-axle configurations under several chassis configurations: tractor, rigid, etc. These vehicles feature various drive formulas for 18-41 tons. MAN advertises, With the TGS you have optimum traction for every soil condition. Whether on the building site, on the road or on a slippery road surface. With the various drive formulas, for example all-wheel drive or MAN HydroDrive®, you can handle every requirement.* The TGS also offers the choice of three cab designs: L, LX, and M cab. The M cab is the short “day job” type, though it can be configured for a folding bunk.

MAN TGS M Fuel Tank Trailer "Shell"
Your Shell tandem trailer MAN semitruck is mostly factory assembled, you must attach the optional mirrors to the cab. It’s securely packed in a form-fitted tray. The tray is held inside a red Herpa carton with a plastic film window, and opens via tabs at each end. The tray has slots for optional parts, and slots your fingers to easily remove the tray from the box.

The models are skillfully molded and assembled without any blemishes or flaws. Doors, hoods, and access panel lines are defined with recessed lines. The grille is molded open. The door handles are flush and are the tabs that hold the cab interior in the cab shell.

Soft tires mounted on detailed chromed hubs support the model. The front wheels can be made to steer if you use Herpa’s steering set. The trailer's front bogie steers and it is assembled with the quality of the rigid truck.

The MAN model features clear lenses for the headlights. Surprisingly, this model set lacks the brake light tinted clear lenses common on every other Herpa model I’ve reviewed!

Detail inside the passenger compartment includes a dashboard, steering wheel, gear shift, console and seats; this detail can be seen through the windows. Separately applied side view mirrors can be attached. These are made of somewhat flexible plastic but can be warped or broken, so use care inserting them into mounting holes. A sunshield is mounted atop the brow of the cab. Windshield wipers detail the windshield.

All of this detail is mounted upon a detailed chassis. The suspension is detailed underneath, as is the drivetrain, battery boxes, suspension, and cylinders. The engine is represented in relief molding. The wheels are molded of a soft plastic or rubber and feature remarkable tread detail.
The trailer also features a high amount of detail: placard hangers and hooks, and suspension.

Both tanks have molded detail for the fill hatches and the tread plate walkways. Ladders provide access to the top on each.

The chassis and bodies are molded in color. The plastic of the cab and tanks is shiny. All livery and emblems are printed. Herpa does not use decals. The finish is smooth.

Off the Lot
Despite the lack of tail lights, this HO scale tandem semitanker truck is an impressive model of a modern heavy haul vehicle. It is certain to enhance any modern diorama or model railroad. Recommended.
