One of the most unusual aircraft accessories to land on my review-desk lately has been True Detail's resin 1970s-style USAF flight helmets. While I've seen plenty of 1:48 figures, I don't think I've ever come across individual items of equipment like this, so they are very welcome indeed.
The blister-packed set contains parts for 4 x helmets. Cast in grey resin, each helmet is complete with a separate oxygen/microphone mask and hose. The detail and casting is quite exquisite, with the helmets and masks hollowed out, and little earphones inside the "bone domes". There's no flash or any bubbles to worry about, but you will need to take care removing the casting blocks. Those for the helmets are relatively large and set in the centre of the exterior. To be fair, I can't really see how else they could have been done, but it does mean you have to file them down very carefully to match the shape, while not damaging the surrounding details.
True Details' USAF flight helmets are superbly produced and will provide an instant touch of "life" to any aircraft vignette or diorama of the era. Highly recommended.
Please remember, when contacting retailers or manufacturers, to mention that you saw their products highlighted here - on AEROSCALE.
Highs: Excellent casting and detail.Lows: Tricky to remove from the casting blocks.Verdict: True Details' helmets are a novel idea and a great little addition to quarterscale USAF vignettes and dioramas.
