Audi A3
The Audi A3 is a small family car (C-segment in Europe) produced by the German automaker Audi since 1996. The first two generations of A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, which they share with several other models such as the Audi TT, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Caddy and Volkswagen Touran as well as SEAT León, SEAT Toledo and Škoda Octavia. The third-generation A3 uses the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

The third generation A3 was launched in three-door hatchback form at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and will go on sale in Europe in September 2012. Based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform, the third generation will later become available as a five-door "Sportback" and convertible. It is at this time when for the first time, an A3 four-door sedan version will be offered—thus effectively filling in the gap left by the A4 which has become larger with each generation. Front suspension is by McPherson strut and there is multi-link rear suspension.

At launch, there were two petrol engine options (a 1.4 TFSI with 120 bhp and a 1.8 TSI with 178 bhp) and a 2.0 TDI diesel with 150 bhp. A 1.6 TDI engine with CO2 emissions...and a 1.2 TFSI petrol engine are also expected later in 2012.

The Model
This new model type joins 135 other Audi models by Herpa, including 8 A3 models. The model is fully assembled and packed in a light plastic form-fitted tray secured in a light plastic box. I do not show it as it was mangled in transit; however, Herpa's great packaging protected the model from damage!

I found no flaws in the molding or assembly. The exterior features fine recessed lines for doors and hoods and panels. The tires have no tread detail except for the very edges.

Herpa features a video of the A3 on Herpa.TV at their website.

Slamin' the door
Individual clear lenses simulate the headlamps and tinted lenses simulate the tail lights.

Separate side view mirrors are attached. Soft plastic tires encompass detailed rims.

The gray interior is very impressive, featuring bucket seats, the steering wheel, console, rear-view mirror, stick shift and dashboard detailing. The rear view and side mirrors lack reflective surfaces. It is easy to see through the clear windows.

Only basic molded detail is found on the underside. Faint windshield wipers are molded onto the black chrome on the windshield. Two exhaust ports peek out from below the rear bumper.

Paint and Finish
This model is beautifully finished with a two-tone glossy phantomschwarz perleffekt / phantom black pearl effect exterior. It is also available in weiß / white. Chrome accent strips exentuate the windows. A chrome Audi logo emblazons the grille and rear, and "A3" is stamp-painted on the back. These emblems and markings are sharply printed and not decals. Herpa does not use decals. The paint is thin, glass-smooth, and opaque.

Kicking the Tires
Herpa has released an impressive model Audi A3. It has fine plastic detail and excellent finishing. It features lenses for headlights and brake lights, a detailed interior, and applied side view mirrors. Printing is sharp. Even though it lacks tire detail and underside detail, I happily recommended this model for collectors, model railroaders, and diorama makers
