IJN Unryu

  • Unryu019
"MSW crewmate Anthony Kochevar (ajkochev) sends us his second MSW submission, this time, a fine looking build of the IJN carrier, Unryu, in this "On Display" feature!"

This is my IJN Unryu aircraft carrier in 1:700 scale. This is the Pit Road kit version of the model, and it is very well done. The kit includes parts to make the two hangar levels. Tomís Modelworks Aircraft carrier set A photoetch was also used with the model.

I decided to depict the carrier on her last mission, carrying supplies and army trucks on the deck to Luzon, Manila, Philippines. I could not find a set of IJA trucks, so the US Army trucks by JAG in 1:700 scale were used and painted the grays of Japans army.

The kit includes black decals for the deck. The clear edges were trimmed off before being applied. The model took about two months to complete and was finished in December 2007. I built this model because I like the camo scheme of the greens. Even though the scheme was not very effective at hiding the ship during the war the colors make for a striking model.

I scratchbuilt several elevators in various positions and made them removable so I could display the model in any situation. The pictures show a double level elevator, this has been corrected on the model since Iíve discovered only the Kaga and Akagi had double level elevators.

About Anthony Kochevar (ajkochev)

I've modeled ships as a teen and started the hobby again in 2005. For some reason I got into the history of the Japanese Navy at this time and started building ships of this navy. I also do N Scale model railroading, reef aquariums and a few video games.

Hi Anthony Thank you for sharing your Unryu with us! I am also found of the green camo, and you have put a good level of detail on your built! Top notch! Congratulations, Rui

Wonderful job on her. I have always thought that was the most unique camo scheme on a ship during WWII. Thank you for sharing her with us.

Thanks everyone. The kit is injection molded and very well done by Pit Road. Especially the fret of small motor launches and rowboats. This fret has lots of detail on the peices, borderline to some resin quality details. The fit of the deck to the hull wasn't too good though, and as a result I had some gaps that I had to fill in myself. An excellent kit but somewhat hard to find nowadays.
