Layout Scenes: Railroad and Canal
Layout Scenes: Railroad and Canal is the first of what I intend to be occassional features presenting interesting scenes to model on your layout or diorama. Whether commonplace or unique, modeling railroad scenes have many sources of inspiration. Whether well known locales like Starrucca Viaduct in Pennsylvania, Copper Creek Viaduct in Virginia, or the grade crossing through your hometown bank parking lot in New Zealand, interesting scenes we can model are almost infinite. I hope this small feature inspires you.Railroad and Canal
Metamora, Indiana, is a preserved 1838 canal town. In the mid-1860s the White Water Valley Railroad built along the canal through Metamora. These photographs present a unique scenery opportunity for a layout or diorama. This scene shows the parallel physical plants of three very different modes of transportation: water way; railroad; automobile road.
I shot these photos in 1990. I hope it inspires you!

Fantastic! I had to go to Google Earth to see what you're showing here, but now I know it's a canal, railroad, and street each crossing over a river, side-by-side. I've seen the I&M Canal in Lockport, IL and the partially restored Portage Canal in Portage, WI, and you're right-- they are very scenic. Good idea!
